Sustainable Capacity Development
The Sustainable Capacity International Institute (SCII) is an international nongovernmental organization of subject matter experts specialized in sustainable capacity development. By centering sustainable institutional capacity development at the core of sustainable development, SCII utilizes an integrated approach between economic, social, environmental with human rights and institutional capacity. Since the 1987 Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), Our Common Future (the Brundtland Report), sustainability has been recognized as integral to economic development, social responsibility, natural capital, and, indirectly, to human rights. Sustainability has become a buzzword. Many use it without fully recognizing its roots on sustainable development. The utilization of an integrated capacity framework for achieving sustainable development is what drives the SCIInstitute in its programming activities, trainings and consultancies. Such an integrated framework is primarily systemic and holistic in its approach. It goes beyond narrow views of development separating access to economic capitals from the social, cultural, environmental and political factors necessary to achieve sustainable development. Our European institute, along with its American counterpart the World Engagement Institute, involves academic institutions, international organizations, government agencies and non-state actors for implementing human rights based sustainable development for conflicts prevention, violence mitigation and restorative justice.
